ANDREW’S TOP CREATIVE TIP: If you love writing, then you must write. Whether or not you get published, and whether or not you make a dollar, is secondary.
Why do you write? I write to share simple concepts that I wish I understood when I was younger, for example:
- consistent daily effort is more important than genius
- happiness is not an accident – it is a choice we make.
What would you be doing if you weren’t a writer? I would be doing other things that I enjoy doing now – cartooning, painting portraits, presenting to corporations.
What was your toughest obstacle to becoming published? Because I write books about happiness, publishers thought I needed to be a psychologist.
What’s the best aspect of your writing life? I receive many emails from readers in different countries who say things like, “Your books helped me through a tough time,” or “Your book helped my son to be more confident.”
—the worst? There is no downside.
What would you do differently if you were starting out now as a writer? I never intended to be an author. Writing and illustrating books evolved from my interest in giving seminars and my love of drawing. I wouldn’t change anything.
What do you wish you’d been told before you set out to become an author? Write only about the subjects that you enjoy. The writing that you love doing the most has the best chance of success.
What’s the best advice you were ever given? Use simple language. Short words are better than big words. Edit and re-edit.
- why the same things keep happening to you
- why bills come in bunches
- how to find the love of your life
- how to find the work you love
- why some people always fall on their feet – and how you can be like them.
How Life Works explains why:
- it’s not WHAT you know
- it’s not WHO you know
- It’s all about how you FEEL.

Andrew Matthews latest book, HOW LIFE WORKS:
THE MYTH: success makes you happy.
THE FACT: happiness makes you successful.
How Life Works It is about why the same things keep happening to you.
It is about why:
- rich people get richer
- lottery winners end up broke
- positive thinking works – but only sometimes
- happy people succeed more often.
